I'm not going to beat around the bush, Sheffield Wednesday won the game 4-2 and beat Hartlepool. It was brilliant!
However, to tell the full story, the day started with me grumpy and subdued due to my pessimism and nerves prior to the match. Then just before noon David and I joined some friends from Sheffield, some of whom I hadn't seen for 8 years or more. It was great to stand around the Cardiff Castle walls, outside a pub and have a couple of pints before the match. It was great to see my old friends, including my former boyfriend Pete from when I was 15! The lads humor was pure Sheffield. Very much taking the piss out of me from the start. Hillarious!
Once in the Millenium stadium the atmosphere was electric with 41,000 Sheffield Wednesday fans singing and drowning out the 18,000 fans from Hartlepool. The Owls went 1-0 up just before half time, but Hartlepool scored two in the second half and with around 10 minuntes to go I thought that was it.
However, luck was shining on us...we got a penalty and not only that but a Hartlepool player was sent off. I almost didn't want to look as the penalty sored passed the keeper. 2-2
Then 90 minutes ticked by and it was 30 minutes of extra time. Wednesday's fitness and extra man on the pitch enabled them to go 3-2 up and even with 3 minutes to go I was still nervous as hell.
As the announcer signalled one minute of the match left, I felt the tears well up inside me. Then Sheffield Wednesday substitute Talbot went on a searing run down the right, drew the keeper off his line and slotted in the goal. I burst out crying in relief and emotional exhaustion. There was no point trying to pretend this didn't matter to me and no point in pretending that this isn't the highlight of being back in England (well except for Lauren!) It was brilliant...
Yeah! Very cool! I'm so excited for you; not only that they won, but that you got to attend. :-) I know exactly how you feel - just like when the Giants won the NLCS in 2002. Total exhiliration. Good luck in the Championship!
