I've just read the blog of my friend Stephanie. She's an American living in London and her husband is from England yet Indian dissent. They took their year old daughter to India to meet the family. They look like they had such a good time. There's many generations; a true family.
I was reviewing the photos and it just hit me. Today after 9 months of not speaking or seeing each other, my sister and her boyfriend, and my parents finally met to talk over their issues. Its been an emotional 9 months and it started before I spent 3 months in England. I am so glad that they are now speaking again. Its important that families stick together and our family has been through more than most, but even this rocked us.
One day I look forward to creating a family of my own and then sharing big family experiences, Christmas together and massive family gatherings. There's nothing more important that those you love.
I think the lesson is that no matter how big or small your family, no family is perfect and you must love each person for the good and bad.
As someone who comes from a small family, I was thrilled to marry into a large family. But in my own experience, both small and large families have their own set of unique challenges.
Just remember the words of some wise visionary "You can pick your friends, you can pick your nose, but you can't pick your family!"
